Vertu's latest Constellation smartphone has high-end specs, dual-SIM support

Vertu has finally unveiled a new luxury smartphone today, and it's the latest to be branded Constellation. Oddly for luxury mobile devices, this one comes with actual high-end specs, as well as dual-SIM functionality (the latter being a first for Vertu).

The new Vertu Constellation has a 5.5-inch QHD AMOLED touchscreen, a 12 MP main camera with 1.55um pixels and 4K video recording, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset at the helm, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable storage, NFC, a USB Type-C port, and a 3,220 mAh battery with support for wireless charging. It unfortunately runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, with absolutely no mention of an upcoming update to Nougat - so don't hold your breath on that one. Then again, the average Vertu buyer probably couldn't care less about such things.

Vertu says the Constellation's display is protected by "a solid section of scratchproof, 140 carat 6th generation sapphire crystal". The handset has front-facing stereo speakers, and "exceptional acoustic performance is achieved with Dolby Digital Plus virtual surround sound processing". The device will be hand-crafted in England from anodized aluminum and finished with leather "sourced from a specialist, family-run tannery in Italy".

Vertu's famous 24-hour concierge service is available on the Constellation too, and you access it by using an inset ruby on the side of the phone, since that also doubles as a button. Additionally, buying the new Constellation gives you access to iPass, the world's largest Wi-Fi network.

The new Vertu Constellation will become available "in boutiques" from mid-February, but the company hasn't announced how much it will cost. This is Vertu though, so don't expect anything under four figures.

BlackBerry Mercury will finally be properly introduced on February 25

The upcoming BlackBerry Mercury with a physical QWERTY keyboard and Android on board is certainly getting one of the weirdest introductions we've seen in recent years. Following many months of leaks about it, TCL showcased the device at CES earlier this month. But here's the twist: even though we already went hands-on with it, its specs are still a mystery. Not to mention pricing or a release date.

So, despite the fact that we know what it looks like already, everything else about it still needs to be properly announced by TCL, the company now making BlackBerry-branded handsets. Thankfully though, that will finally happen later this month in Barcelona, at a pre-MWC event.

BlackBerry's press conference will take place on February 25. At CES TCL officials did tell us that they were aiming for an actual unveiling of the phone at MWC, and it's good to see that's going to pan out after all. The device may be called Mercury, or DTEK70, or even something else - we don't even know that for sure at this point.

According to past leaks and rumors, it should have a 4.5" or so display with 1,620x1,080 resolution, the Snapdragon 821 or 625 at the helm, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a 13 MP main camera, and an 8 MP unit for selfies. It will run Android 7.0 Nougat.

New Motorola phone with Snapdragon 835 SoC, and Android 7.1.1 spotted on Geekbench

A new Motorola phone has appeared on the Geekbench benchmarking website. Listed as Motorola XT1650, the device - the listing reveals - is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 chipset, and has 4GB of RAM.

Aside from this, the listing also reveals that the device runs Android Nougat version 7.1.1. Sadly, nothing else is currently known about this flagship at the moment, but given the model number (XT1650), it could well be the Moto Z (2017).

ZTE BA602 with quad-core CPU and 5.5-inch display spotted on TENAA

A new ZTE smartphone has been spotted on the website of the Chinese telecommunication authority TENAA. Listed as BA602, the device is powered by an SoC with quad-core, 1.25GHz processor, and sports a 5.5-inch HD display.

RAM options include 1GB ,2GB, and 3GB, while storage options include 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB. In terms of camera, the phone features an 8MP rear unit and a 2MP front shooter. Measuring 153.3 × 77 × 8.6mm and weighing in at 168g, the BA602 runs Android 6.0 and packs in a 3,000mAh battery.

Color options include quicksand gold, galaxy silver, phantom gray, quiet blue, and black. No information on pricing and availability so far.

HTC's Android Wear smartwatch project might still be alive

Rumors of HTC's dip into the smartwatch realm go all the way back to 2015, when we first heard of a device codenamed "halfbeak". After that initial wave of excitement, little was actually heard of the alleged wearable, until today. Out of the blue, a working HTC-branded unit was spotted in a rather extensive photo set on Weibo.

Even back in 2015, little information about halfbeak actually got out. The device was either in way too early stages of development of very well hidden. Most sources did, however, suggest a flat tire style display, with a resolution of 360x360 pixels and a development parthership with Under Armor.

It appears now, well over a year later, the cooperation has apparently endured, as one of the photos clearly shows the Under Armor logo on the back of the unit. As for the flat tire design - it is now replaced with a much more contemporary round panel. This does add some credibility to the theory that we are, indeed, looking at a recent development prototype, not something, someone dug up from storage.

Then again, the latter might be true as well. After all, it is also worth noting that the unit appears to be running on an older 1.x Android Wear version. This strikes us as somewhat of a red flag regarding authenticity, since Android Wear 2.0 should be officially released only a few days from now and thus be the development platform of choice for any upcoming Wear hardware.

We will just leave it at that and let you decide for yourself whether to wait on halfbeak at MWC 2017, or not.

Sony suspends Nougat update for Xperia Z5

The long-awaited Android 7.0 update for the Sony Xperia Z5 family was finally released just days ago, but now it seems it has been pulled, XperiaBlog reports based on user feedback.

The OTA, build number 32.3.A.0.372, had shown up for some Z5 owners, but it has since disappeared and is also nowhere to be found on Sony servers. The entire Z5 range is affected, as well as the Z3+, and the Z4 Tablet.

It's unclear what caused Sony to pull the update, with reasons ranging from just a temporary halt to issues with the firmware itself that need to be resolved before it's reached mass adoption. Users have reported some bugs already, including problems with video playback, stuttering in the call app, and unusual battery drain.

Samsung Galaxy S8 to use a heat pipe design similar to the S7

The Galaxy S7 was Samsung’s first phone to feature a heat pipe and word from the grapevine is that the company will use a similar design for the upcoming Galaxy S8. Allegedly, Samsung considered moving to a two-pipe design, but ultimately decided to stick with the tried and tested setup.

Back when the S7 launched, its heat pipe was the thinnest on the market - Samsung worked with its partners to make a pipe just 0.4mm thick. The pipe is responsible for taking heat from the chipset and bringing it to a graphite sheet on the back where it can be dispersed.

Heat pipes are often found in high-end computer coolers (both desktop and laptop) and have gained popularity in phones recently. Apparently, LG is considering a similar pipe for the LG G6. Anyway, Samsung is expecting shipment of the Galaxy S8 pipes to start in February.

Sony Xperia XZ and X Performance are being updated with the January security patches

Today Sony has issued a new software update for the Xperia XZ and the Xperia X Performance. This contains the January security patches, as released by Google. It might also fix an issue where the phone clock would reset after rebooting, but so far it hasn't been confirmed whether this patch is in as well.

That's it, though, no new features or anything like that this time around. That said, this is the third update that these two handsets have seen in the past 30 days or so, following one from the beginning of the year and the one which brought them the December security fixes last month. So it's good to see Sony keeping up with Google in this regard, even if only for a few high-end phones.

The new update is headed to the single-SIM and dual-SIM versions of both the Xperia XZ and Xperia X Performance. After you install it, you will have moved from build number 39.2.A.0.374 to 39.2.A.0.386, as evidenced by the screenshots above.

Super Mario Run for Android launching this March

While we already knew that Super Mario Run is coming soon to Android, Nintendo has now confirmed the launch month. According to the Japanese company, it's first proper mobile game will be available on Google's mobile platform this March.

The game released on iOS early last month. It's also listed on the Play Store, but is not available for download at the moment - you can only pre-register in order to get alerts on when the launch will happen.

It's likely that the Android version of Super Mario Run will be identical to the iOS version, including the pricing ($10 after the first three levels).

No new iPads until the summer

We already reported that Apple is planning to announce three new iPads this year. The company is expected to announce a 9.7” iPad with an affordable price tag, a new 10.5” iPad and an upgraded 12.9” iPad Pro.

Sadly the products are still in planning with the 9.7” device expected to begin manufacturing in Q1 2017 and the other two in the second quarter. The delay is happening because the A10X chipsets for the bigger two devices are still in production and Apple is unlikely to do one-device announcements.

Since there’s no mini version expected 9.7” iPad will become the entry-level device, targeted for educators, the 10.5” will oust the current 9.7” device while the 12.9” will simply be an upgraded Pro tablet.

New LG G6 leaked renders show it inside a case

We've supposedly seen the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 inside a case already, so it's really not surprising that one of its biggest competitors is now getting the same treatment. The LG G6 will be unveiled before the Galaxy S8, with an event planned for February 26. LG's device may also become available earlier than Samsung's latest and greatest, so we would have expected to see more leaks about the G6 these days - then again, the S8 is clearly the more eagerly anticipated phone.

The images you can see below come from case maker Ghostek, and they show an upcoming product from that company for the LG G6. Thankfully this means we also catch a few glimpses of the handset itself, even though it's inside the case in the first renders.

From the second image we find out that the G6 will be pretty thin, and also devoid of any unsightly camera bump. That said, the design of the back is inline with its LG-made predecessors, when it comes to the dual camera arrangement and the fingerprint scanner below that.

With the G6, LG is giving up on its modular dreams and instead presenting us with a metal and glass device that should sport a 5.7-inch 2880x1440 touchscreen and will probably be water resistant. As for specs, we hope to see the Snapdragon 835 in there, aided by at least 4GB of RAM.

As usual with such leaks, what's shown here can't be verified until LG announces the G6, and we're still more than a month away from that. So while there's a good chance that this is, at least roughly, what the smartphone will end up looking like, you have hopefully taken it with a pinch of salt.

Otherwise, if you cancel wireless service, the balance becomes due for both that handset as well as the iPhone SE.

Samsung unveils the Nougat waiting list: Galaxy S6, Note5 and others are invited

Samsung is sending out Nougat treats to Galaxy S7 and S7 edge owners (since January 17) but the latest press release lists devices that are next in line (well, in the first half of this year).

The previous flagships - Galaxy S6 (including edge and Plus versions) and Galaxy Note5 - are among the eligible devices. The original A-series is getting it too, the Galaxy A3 and A8 anyway, the A5 and A7 are not on the list (though the A5 should be). Besides phones, two tabs are included - Galaxy Tab A with S Pen and Tab S2 (LTE, unlocked).

Multiple Nougat features have been incorporated into the update plus some Samsung exclusives. There’s Multi-window and Performance mode (includes Game Launcher and Tools), Direct Reply in the notification area (which has been redesigned). Another addition is Samsung Pass, a “master key” for website logins and apps (soon to be used in mobile backing apps).

iPhone 8 wireless charging 'confirmed' by a new report

At this point it seems pretty clear that the flagship iPhone of 2017, which may be called iPhone 8 or iPhone X, will come with support for wireless charging. We've heard rumors about this before, and today a new report from the Chinese-language Commercial Times confirms the feature.

According to cited "industry sources", Lite-On Semi has entered Apple's supply chain in order to provide half of the required GPP bridge rectifiers, which are needed to make wireless charging work. It's still unclear what company is building the other half.

Lite-On Semi refused to comment, as you'd expect. The wireless charging rumors for the iPhone 8 have so far gone hand-in-hand with those speaking about the device having a glass back, which makes perfect sense since no one's solved the wireless charging through metal problem yet. Other details about this year's iPhones are more in flux, with some sources recently talking about three handsets launching in the fall - the flagship iPhone 8 (or X) with a 5.7" or so curved AMOLED touchscreen, as well as an iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus.

Nokia 6 sells out in a minute on launch day

Unveiled a couple of weeks ago, the Nokia 6 hit the shelves today right on schedule. The first flash sale saw the phone going out of stock in just a minute.

While we are not sure how many units actually were available, it's not entirely surprising given that the handset had received over a million registrations for its first flash sale.

Specs-wise, the Nokia 6 is powered by Snapdragon 430 chipset with an octa-core CPU, and sports a 5.5” 1080p screen that has a curved 2.5D Gorilla Glass sheet on top. The device comes with 4GB/64GB memory configuration and 16MP/8MP camera combo.
